Longtime Artist Encourages Creativity In Classes at Old Poway Park

Susan Bainbridge teaches children art using several forms of media.

Susan Bainbridge has been making art since she was old enough to hold a pencil, and one of her fondest childhood memories is drawing things with her family from pictures they found in their encyclopedia.

“It seemed like we were always drawing something,” said Bainbridge, now an art teacher of more than 20 years who owns Art Start studio in Poway.

While in fourth grade, she recalls learning how to draw an oak tree complete with gnarled roots during a directed lesson and “really enjoying the experience.”

It’s with the same principals that she’ll be teaching at for the next five weeks. The class will meet at 4 p.m. every Monday starting Oct. 10, and children ages 6 to 12 will learn how to work with oil pastels, markers, watercolor and clay.

“I really want the kids to learn to be creative and learn to love art because I think it’s something they can use all their life,” Bainbridge said.
