Westview High Student Wins Award For Creating Dementia Safety App

A Westview High School student won Microsoft's "Imagine Cup Junior 2020" award for his work in artificial intelligence.

POWAY, CA – A Westview High School student won Microsoft's "Imagine Cup Junior 2020" award for his work in artificial intelligence.

Edmund Sumpena won the award for his machine learning project, "Wanderguardian," which focuses on assisting people with dementia. The app is designed to reduce the risk of wandering among people with neurological disorders through a geofencing system.

The Imagine Cup Junior provides an opportunity for students around the world to learn about AI regardless of their current technology knowledge or capability. Students were asked to choose an issue and articulate their concept using AI.

"This example of applying course knowledge to a real-world problem, and yielding effective results, is outstanding," school officials said in a Facebook post. "Well-deserved, Edmund!"
