April 17 Is Tax Filing Deadline This Year

The IRS will accept e-file and Free File returns beginning Jan. 17.

The Internal Revenue Service has extended the tax filing deadline this year until Tuesday, April 17 because the normal tax day falls on a weekend.

The extension, announced Wednesday, gives taxpayers an extra two days to file and pay any money due since the usual tax day—April 15—falls on a Sunday and the next day is a holiday in the District of Columbia, Emancipation Day.

Those who request extensions will have until Oct. 15 to file, but payment is still due by April 17. The IRS, which expects to receive 144 million individual tax returns this year, will begin accepting e-file and Free File returns on Jan. 17.
