Fire Burns 250 Acres, Threatens Structures In Ramona

RAMONA, CA – A rapidly-moving brush fire broke out Thursday afternoon in Ramona, quickly burning dozens of acres and threatening structures in the area.

The blaze, called the Rangeland Fire, sparked along state Route 78 at Rangeland Road, according to Cal Fire. The eastwardly-moving fire scorched 250 acres and threatened homes in the area. One firefighter suffered a minor injury, officials said.

The fire was first reported around 1:12 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol's incident logs. Firefighters stopped the forward rate of spread roughly two hours later.

By 7:20 p.m., the fire was 60 percent contained, officials said. Crews were expected to remain on the scene overnight and throughout Friday.

Authorities closed SR-78 from Orosco Truck Trail to Horizon View. The highway was expected to reopen in both directions at 10 p.m., according to Cal Fire. Authorities planned to have only one lane open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

Smoke was visible as far away as San Marcos, according to a drift smoke advisory from the city.

The fire was burning near the area of the Pasqual Fire, which blackened 365 acres, closed SR-78 and prompted evacuations late July.
