Motorcyclist Dies in Ramona Crash

The 55-year-old Harley Davidson rider died Monday on state Route 78.

RAMONA, CA: A motorcyclist killed in a crash Monday in Ramona has been identified by authorities.

Thomas Andrew Grettenberger, 55, of San Diego, was driving a 2016 Harley Davidson westbound on state Route 78 Monday afternoon, just west of Sutherland Dam Road when he went off the roadway, according to a report from the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

"He was traveling behind his friend," the report stated. "When the friend looked back, the decedent was not on the road."

Grettenberger was later found down an embankment, unresponsive. A bystander gave him CPR while 911 was called. 

Aggressive efforts to resuscitate him continued when emergency personnel arrived, according to the report; however, Grettenberger did not respond and was pronounced deceased from blunt force neck and chest trauma at 4:55 p.m. at the scene.

It was not clear from the report how much time passed between when he went off the road and when rescue efforts began.

The California Highway Patrol was investigating the death.
