This weekend, San Diego is getting a taste of another country—Honduras.
Sunday night will bring a delicious fundraiser over at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church. The organization Coffee 4 Kids is hosting a “” Night. For those unfamiliar with baleadas, they are a typical Honduran food, similar to a burrito. Each attendee will get to assemble their baleada and choose from ingredients like: black beans, cream, Honduran cheese, avocado, pickled onions, plantains, scrambled eggs, stewed chicken, chorizo and chimchurri.
This is the second annual baleada event and all the money that is raised helps children in the largest public hospital in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Things like food, soap, toilet paper, syringes, medicines, medical supplies and chemotherapy can be bought with the money raised.

“All of the children in this hospital are malnourished, more than half have cancer, most have parasites, most have diarrhea, almost all also have secondary infections,” said Shawn Plowman, M.S., R.D. and director of Coffee 4 Kids in an e-mail to Patch. “Through this program we have been able to save the lives of many of these children.”
The night of baleadas and fellowship will include music, food, a short documentary film, balloon animals, and speakers. Childcare will be available.
