Dumanis Pledges Mayoral Salary to Education

District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis pledged Tuesday to donate her city salary to education programs if she is elected mayor of San Diego.

Dumanis also said she would not accept a city pension. However, she would remain eligible for a pension of around $210,000 from the county of San Diego if she wins the election, according to an estimate last year by the website voiceofsandiego.org.

In a statement to the media, Dumanis said she would give her city salary of more than $100,000, minus taxes, to the Summer of Work and Learning program, and expanding student access to new technologies.

"America's Finest City deserves to have America's Finest City Schools," Dumanis said. "To help turn this vision into reality, I'm making a personal commitment to help fund new opportunities for San Diego students, and encourage others to do the same."

Last week, she released an eight-point plan to improve education in San Diego.

"The quality of our schools directly impacts our economy, our quality of life, and our own future," Dumanis said.  "That's why I'm personally committed to the success of this reform movement."

She is up against Councilman Carl DeMaio, Rep. Bob Filner, D-San Diego, and Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, R-San Diego—among others—in the June 5 primary.
