New Whooping Cough Case at Bernardo Heights Middle School
Others at the middle school may have been exposed, county health officials say.

A 13-year-old student at may have exposed others to whooping cough, county health officials announced Friday.
The student was one of three new pertussis cases with a potential for public exposure in schools over the past week, according to a release from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. The department regularly makes similar announcements.
There were a record number of pertussis, or whooping cough, cases in the county in 2010 with 1,144, including two infant deaths. This week's new cases bring the 2011 total to 195.

Health officials recommend the pertussis vaccine or booster shots for everyone 10 and older. Starting July 1, all county students in seventh through 12th grade will be required to how proof of receiving a pertussis booster shot before they can come to school. For more information, visit sdiz.org.
