After all, he's her son.
"He's just different and he's driven. He's got that drive and he thinks about the future," Long said of the RB High senior. "He's just a good kid. He's easy."
Patch first came across Permann at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Festival, where he was manning the booth for the RB High Friends of the Library—a student-led fundraising arm for the Rancho Bernardo Library.
It was a Sunday morning, precious weekend time for the teen, but there he was. Permann said he's spent much of his high school years out and about with clubs and volunteer organizations. While many parents stay after their teens to come in from partying, Long said she had to remind her son to "come home and get some sleep" instead of putting in so many hours with school activities.
Permann recently ended his one-year term as ASB president, but his work is far from finished. An upcoming talent show is the latest project taking all of his time.
And then there's college.
Permann, whose mother is half-Japanese, plans to attend Temple University in Japan through a special program at the Philadelphia-based college. After two years there, he said he's headed to Rome. He hopes to work in the hospitality industry.
He's ready to leave now, he said.
"Maybe because I've done so much here, I don't know. I'm just ready," Permann said.
