Poway Unified: API By the Numbers

The state released school performance data on Wednesday showing improving performance for Poway Unified students.

State education officials on Wednesday released Academic Performance Index (API) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) data which is used to measure compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind education standards.

Academic Performance Index (API)

  • Measures student performance on math and English tests.
  • Scale 200-1,000; Target is 800.
  • All traditional PUSD schools met the target.
  • 21 scored at least 900, including 19 of 25 elementaries.

  • Lowest:Valley Elementary (807)

Middle

  • Highest: Mesa Verde Middle (933)
  • Lowest: Meadowbrook (868)

High Schools

  • Del Norte (864)
  • Westview High (860)
  • Poway High (854)
  • Rancho Bernardo High (841)
  • Mount Carmel (825)

API Growth

  • Largest increase in 2011

Elementary: Pomerado Elementary—24 points (857-->881)

Middle: Meadowbrook Middle—9 points (859-->868)

High: Westview—9 points (851-->860)

  • Largest decrease in 2011

Elementary: Valley Elementary—18 points (825-->807)

Middle: Oak Valley—6 points (915-->909)

High: Rancho Bernardo—13 points (854-->841)

 

Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)

  • Measures progress toward 100 percent student proficiency or better on tests. All schools are expected to have 100 percent proficiency by 2014 under NCLB.
  • Schools and subgroups of students (race, economic status, etc.) have growth targets each year.
  • Schools that receive funding for low-income students and do not meet their targets, either overall or for all of their subgroups, for two years in a row become "Program Improvement" or PI schools. They lose the label after two years of meeting their goals.

Valley Elementary School is now a PI school, though it meets the 800-point API target with a score of 807.
