School Board Preview: Audit, Environment and Calendar

The board will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The Poway Unified School District Board is set to hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday at the district office, 15250 Avenue of Science, San Diego.

Here's a look at what's on the agenda (the full agenda is attached):

  • 2010-11 financial audit report: The board will be asked to accept an independent report conducted by Wilkinson, Hadley, King & Co., LLP. The meeting agenda says there were no audit findings.
  • Preliminary Environmental Assessment (PEA) report for School No. 39: There will be a public hearing and vote on a PEA about 22 acres in Black Mountain Ranch acquired by the district for a new project. The assessment report, undertaken to determine if there are hazardous materials that could be harmful to children, found that there is "no substantial evidence in the record supporting a fair argument that the Project may result in significant environmental impacts."
  • First reading of proposed calendar for 2012-13 school year: The proposed calendar includes 180 students, five more than the reduced school year of 175 days that was negotiated with employee unions for the current school year. Those deals expire in June 2012, but the five-day reduction, permitted by state law, could be renewed during the coming negotiations and the calendar would be changed. However, the school year would not begin before Aug. 20, 2012 or end later than June 13, 2013 after changes.
    • School begins: Monday, Aug. 20, 2012.
    • Winter break: Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 to Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 (inclusive).
    • Spring break: Monday, March 25, 2013 to Thursday, March. 28, 2013, with a spring holiday on Friday, March 29, 2013.
    • Last day of school: Thursday, June 13, 2013.
  • Enrollment report: As of Oct. 14, 2011: 34,565.
