PQ: Deer Canyon Elementary Volunteers Get Things on Track

A team of parent and community volunteers have been helping Deer Canyon Elementary School build a track for students.

Deer Canyon Elementary School is on the last leg of creating a track on campus, with the goal of helping improve student health and fitness.

On Thursday, Principal Terry Worthington grabbed a shovel with the rest of the parent and community volunteers who are helping create the track with donated time and materials, with an eco-friendly approach.

“By recycling the excavated soil for on-site reuse, the number of diesel trucks and other soil loading equipment that would typically be used to load, transport, and dispose of the excavated soil at an off-site location and that contribute to greenhouse gasses will be eliminated,” said Daryl Hernandez, principal engineer, in a statement.

“Local sourced materials are being used for the running track. Because these materials are being supplied by local venders, carbon emissions for transporting the track materials are significantly reduced. These natural materials also allow for rain water to infiltrate to the subsurface, which reduces the flow of storm water runoff into storm drains,” he said.
