This year, the junior founded the Breast Cancer Awareness Club at her school.
Gurley said she and her mother are passionate about spreading breast cancer awareness, because her mom lost a friend to the disease. In November, the pair participated in the three-day Breast Cancer Walk.
“It’s an important cause because any man or woman can go through it,” Gurley said. “It doesn’t get as much attention as it should, in my opinion.”
The 16 year old is also an active volunteer at Friends & Family Community Connection, a nonprofit that helps distribute food and outreach locally and internationally.
“I just love giving back,” Gurley said. “My family and I have so much that I just like to give to people who don’t have as many opportunities as I do.”
In addition to her volunteer work, Gurley is a member of her school’s junior class council and student senate. She is also an athlete on Rancho Bernardo High School's varsity softball team and a local travel softball team.
