America Recycles Day: Rancho Santa Margarita Recycle Information

Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day. The city of Rancho Santa Margarita has information on how to get our recycling to 75% of waste recycled.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Recycling may start with tossing bottles, cans and newspapers in a special bin. But it’s so much more. Recycling is about keeping communities clean and safe. It’s about sustainability and diverting waste to the most appropriate places.

Since 1989, California law has required cities and counties to reduce by 50 percent the amount of waste disposed of in landfills. The new goal is 75 percent. Though jurisdictions hold the responsibility for meeting the waste diversion mandates, it is residents and businesses that generate the waste.

Businesses are accustomed to including requirements in their operational plans. Families’ recycling plans typically are dictated by the color of the bins delivered by waste haulers. Then there are the unanswered questions about what goes where.
That’s what America Recycles Day is all about. A national initiative of the Keep America Beautiful campaign, the outreach effort invites people and organizations to take a recycling pledge. Visit https://americarecyclesday.org/pledge/ to take the pledge.
