October is National Women’s Small Business Month, a time to recognize the accomplishments of women in the small business arena. “Personally, the reward of having a small business for me is the satisfaction of helping families,” said attorney Lori Smith, founder of the Law Office of Lori Smith, who focuses on family law.
In honor of National Women’s Small Business Month, Smith shares the following five tips for women who want to start a small business:
No. 1: Be strong and ignore the competition. “That is to say, do what you need to do and stay focused on your goals,” said Smith.

No. 2: Take pride in your work. “If you don’t take pride in your work, no one else will,” said Smith. “You also won’t get respect from your peers.”
No. 3: Work hard. “A major advantage of having your own business is that there is no cap in your income, as long as you are willing to work hard,” added Smith.

No. 4: Know how to advertise. “Advertising for women in small business is an art form, as you have to know your target audience and market appropriately,” stressed Smith.
No. 5: Schedule flexibly. “Women that are small business owners have the freedom to schedule accordingly, personally and professionally,” concluded Smith.
