Boy On Bike Hit With Truck, Suffers Serious Injuries In Coto De Caza

An 8-year-old boy was seriously injured Thursday when he was hit by a pickup truck in Coto de Caza, the California Highway Patrol said.

COTO DE CAZA, CA — An 8-year-old boy on a bike was hospitalized Thursday with serious injuries after he was struck by a pickup truck in Coto de Caza, authorities said.

The boy, who was not identified by authorities, was riding his bicycle west near the crosswalk at Coto de Caza Drive at around 7:25 a.m. Thursday.

The boy was riding his bike to Wagon Wheel Elementary School when the crash occurred, According to Orange County Fire Authority Sgt. Steve Concialdi.

He was struck by a 1999 Ford F-150 that was eastbound on Oso Parkway and turning left onto north Coto de Caza, California Highway Patrol Officer Rafael Reynoso told City News Service.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with CHP officers. Officers investigating the scene do not expect that drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash, though the case remains under review, authorities said.

The boy was taken to Mission Hospital, where he was scheduled to undergo surgery. The extent of his injuries was not specified by authorities.

According to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi, the boy was listed in serious condition but was wearing a helmet while riding his bike, which likely helped spare him more injuries.
