CUSD Making It Harder For Students To Graduate College Ready

A-G Completion Rates Continue to Decline

To be considered for admission, to a UC or Cal State School, a student must complete 15 yearlong high school courses with a grade of C or better — at least 11 of them prior to your senior year. Failure to do so will limit a student to Community College. CUSD’s A-G completion declined from 53.1% to 52.5% last year.

One of the main reasons that students have trouble completing A-G requirements is due to the Districts requirement that students take a semester of Health and a semester of CCP (not required by the State of California to graduate). CUSD is the only local District that requires CCP.

Students who want to meet their A-G requirements are being forced to take Health and CCP in the summer so that they have room in their schedule to complete A-G required classes.

If Health were incorporated into PE and CCP was dropped the A-G completion rates would climb dramatically.

On July 15, 2015 Board of Trustees Board/Superintendent Workshop the Board reviewed CUSD High School Graduation Requirements:

CUSD Previously reported that 669 students needed credit recovery referrals for CCP in 2014-15 (see Slide Page 7 of 13)

Corrected Data shows that of the 677 students who elected to take CCP this summer, only 29 students needed credit recovery referrals for CCP (Slide page 9 of 13).

Freshmen enrollment for 2015-16: 4,220
Students who took CCP this Summer to free up schedule: 648 (677 less 29)
Students who took Health this summer to free up their schedule: 1,057

CUSD has 40% of its incoming Freshmen taking summer school so that they can complete A-G required classes during the school year. What a tremendous waste of time and resources for students and the District.

CCP/Health is a waste of moneyCUSD hires 17 teachers to teach CCP and 18 teachers to teach Health. CUSD class sizes are the highest in the State and in the Nation; this money should be used to hire teachers to reduce class sizes, not make it more difficult for students to graduate. Details on A-G Completion Rates

LCAP Goal 3: 1. Number of students completing a-g requirements will increase by 3% - GOAL NOT MET

June 24, 2015 Board of Trustee Meeting Agenda Item #5 Discussion/Action (Exhibit 5 Page 5) Local Control Accountability Plan and Annual Up-date

LCAP - Goal 3: Presented by Stacy Yogi, Executive State & Federal Programs

1) Increase the number of students completing A-G Requirements by 3%.

The LCAP states that the Official CDE 2012-13 a-g completion rate for CUSD was 53.1%. “Unofficial” CUSD a-g rate for 2013-14 is __________ and 2014-15 will be available in July 2015.”

Rather then state the “Official” number of 52.5%, Staff continued to reference an “Unofficial” number of 54.1%. In error- Trustees voted to adopt the LCAP amending it to reflect the “unofficial” 54.1%.

The Official number of 52.5% is posted on the California Data Quest Web Site at the following link and has been available to CUSD and should have been included on the LCAP.

The LCAP’s stated Goal was 3% improvement over 2012-13’s2012-13 a-g completion rate was 53.1%

The goal for 2014-15 was 53.1% + 3% = 56.1%

The Official number for 2014-15 was 52.5%

This is a 3.6% decrease below the LCAP’s stated goal and should have been accurately reflected on the Districts LCAP.

A member of the Public Wendy Shrove questioned this number at the Board meeting and was told that the official number for 2013-14 was 54.1. The 54.1 as represented by Stacy Yogi, Executive State & Federal Programs is a misrepresentation of the facts.

The Board adopted an LCAP that has incorrect information on it.
