Dozens of Bunnies Need Homes After OC Woman 'Lost Control' of Her Multiplying Flock

Orange County Authorities today are looking for homes for about 60 rabbits taken from a Santa Ana woman who “lost control” of her rapidly multiplying flock after adopting one bunny.

Santa Ana police officers answering a complaint in the 400 block of south Broadway on Tuesday night “observed what may be a hoarding situation” in the rear of a one-car garage that the woman was renting for her residence, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

The city’s animal control officers followed up Wednesday and found about 60 bunnies living in small crates in the garage, Bertagna said.

“There were no signs of malnutrition or abuse to the rabbits,” Bertagna said. “She said she lost control of the situation and that it started with one and very quickly she ended up with 60, and approximately 10 of them are pregnant.”

The woman, whose name was withheld, worried that if she called animal control officials for help, they would euthanize the rabbits, Bertagna said.

The woman agreed to give up the bunnies and has not been cited, despite a city ordinance restricting residents to four rabbits, Bertagna said.

“We’re just trying to find them new homes,” he said.
