East Coast Blizzard Triggers Flight Cancellations at John Wayne Airport

Passengers are advised to check with their airlines to see if the east coast blizzard will affect their travel plans.

A blizzard warning in the Northeast today has led to flight cancellations at John Wayne Airport, authorities said.

As of 9 a.m., the cancellations included 2 arrivals and 2 departures, according to Jenny Wedge, airport spokeswoman. Most the of the cancellations involve United Flights to or from New Jersey, but travelers should be prepared for the possibility that their midwest flights could also experience delays or cancellations, Wedge warned. Travelers were urged to consult their airlines for specific flight information.

A warning was in effect today for coastal areas from New Jersey to Maine, where a “nor’easter” was expected to bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions, the National Weather Service reported.

Up to three feet of snow could fall in the region in the next couple of days, according to some estimates.

According to the NWS, a blizzard includes heavy snow and/or blowing snow; 35-plus mph winds or frequent gusts; and visibility of one-quarter mile or less, with some “whiteout” conditions that make it difficult to see and that can cause disorientation.
