Sports Shorts: Eagles Lose Lacrosse Coach to Rival Mater Dei
After leading Santa Margarita to an undefeated run through the Trinity League, Cressita Bowman is hired to coach Monarchs. Eagles lose in volleyball to Newport Harbor.
Cressita Bowman, who coached girls lacrosse at Santa Margarita Catholic High for the past two seasons, has been hired for the same position at Mater Dei High, the school announced Wednesday.
Bowman led the Eagles to their first Trinity League title in the spring, finishing league play undefeated, including two victories over Mater Dei. The Eagles (15-4) reached the finals of the US Lacrosse Southern Section Orange County Division 1 Championships, defeating top-seeded Foothill along the way.
Before heading the program at Santa Margarita, Bowman was an assistant coach at Mission Viejo High. She played on the Lynchburg College women’s lacrosse team from 2002-06 and serves on the board of US Lacrosse.
In addition to coaching the Monarchs’ girls team, she will also teach in the Santa Ana school’s science department.

Santa Margarita's girls volleyball team, No. 8 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 coaches' poll, lost to No. 5 Newport Harbor in three sets Tuesday in a nonleague match at home.

Senior Katy Crouse had 12 kills and junor Taylor Whittingham had 19 saves for the Eagles, who now head north to play in the Archbishop Mitty tournament, beginning Friday in San Jose.

Santa Margarita fans, who will have traveled to watch their Eagles football team play Thursday night at Trabuco Hills High, will have plenty of opportunity to see other teams in the Trinity League play games on Friday night.
Fox Sports West will broadcast the Servite vs. La Habra game delayed at 7:30 p.m. At the same time, there will be live streaming video on FoxSportsWest.com's "Prep Zone" of the Orange Lutheran-Tustin and the Mater Dei-Corona Centennial games.
Of course, if you're partial to seeing games in person, JSerra is playing host to Hacienda Heights Wilson at Saddleback College Friday at 7 p.m.
