Brave dog dies from injuries trying to guard couple from black bear (redding.com) — A Trinity County couple is recovering after a rare black bear attack at their rural home, where their small dog Cassie died protecting them and has since been celebrated by many Northern California supporters. Treated for serious bite, claw, and head injuries, they’re using a GoFundMe to help with medical bills while urging neighbors and visitors around Redding to stay “bear aware” and respect wildlife without letting fear dominate. 3. CAL FIRE to conduct Lower Gas Point Vegetation Management Project in October (actionnewsnow.com) — CAL FIRE’s Shasta-Trinity Unit, based out of Redding, will conduct a prescribed burn October 1–2 near Lower Gas Point Road to reduce wildfire fuel and protect nearby communities and natural resources. Residents may see smoke, crews, and aircraft during the operation as about 250 acres of grasses, brush, and dead trees are treated under closely monitored conditions.

Sheboygan man hospitalized with West Nile virus after collapsing on California hiking trip (wbay.com) — A 66-year-old Wisconsin man was airlifted to a hospital in Redding and remains in the ICU after contracting West Nile virus during a hiking trip in Northern California. His family says recovery could take months, and they’ve launched a GoFundMe to help cover medical and travel costs while they stay by his side. The case underscores the seriousness of mosquito-borne illness for older hikers visiting this region.
