Brian Levin, director of CSUSB’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism, was quoted in a column by Phillip Jackson on Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man killed while jogging in early 2020. Three men were convicted in his death and now await a federal trial on charges of committing a hate crime; the U.S. Justice Department alleges that the defendants, who are white, targeted Arbery “because of his race and color.”
“There is something so simple and tragic about a young man not even being able to run and jog in public in America,” said Levin, a hate crime expert and attorney. “It is not only the tragedy and the loss of Arbery, it was mounting to the beginnings of a lynch mob.”
