University officials issued a shelter-in-place order for everyone on campus due to the possible shooting, then began evacuating buildings.

SAN BERNARDINO, CA — Reports of shots fired Wednesday evening on the campus of California State University San Bernardino prompted school officials to issue a shelter-in-place order, cancel classes for the rest of the night and ultimately, have police escort all students and staff and faculty members off campus.

Shots were reportedly heard at about 5:40 p.m. near the Visual Arts Building and Parking Structure West, university officials said on Twitter. Just before 6 p.m., those on campus were asked not to leave and to shelter in place.

Media reports indicated evidence was found of a gunshot hitting a building.

"Lt. Mike Madden, of the San Bernardino Police Department, which is assisting university police, said a single shot struck the exterior of a building and that no one was injured," The Press-Enterprise reported. "The shot might have come from the foothill area, Madden said, citing the early stages of the investigation."

As of 9 p.m., an investigation into the shooting was ongoing and university police were going building to building, escorting people off campus.
