Fundraiser Underway For South Bay Siblings With Brain Tumors

Medical professionals told the family they have never encountered siblings diagnosed with a brain tumor within weeks of each other.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – A fundraiser is underway for a family in Redondo Beach currently going through a devastating coincidence – both 6-year-old sister Kalea and 4-year-old brother Noah were diagnosed with brain tumors within weeks of each other, according to fundraiser organizer Christopher Allen Peer.

Kalea Avery experienced severe headaches for several weeks, and was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma – her tumor was removed on June 11. Brother Noah Avery started complaining of headaches two weeks after his sister, and was also diagnosed with a brain tumor – his removal surgery was on June 25, according to the fundraiser.

Both children will have to undergo intensive courses of both chemotherapy and radiation therapy. The medical professionals working with the children, including the Children's Hospital Los Angeles oncologists, the pediatric neurosurgeon, and Kalea's pediatrician, have never encountered siblings diagnosed with a brain tumor within weeks of each other, according to the fundraiser.

The family is well-connected in the Redondo Beach community. Dad Duncan Avery is the surf coach and former volleyball coach at Redondo Union High School, and mom Nohea Avery is a nurse practitioner working in an outpatient medical office, and was a former nurse at Torrance Memorial Medical Center Intensive Care Unit, Peer wrote on the fundraising page.
