Altercation Between Lifeguard And Teen Stirs Up South Bay Brouhaha: WATCH
An "entitled" kid and a "powertripping" official: Locals have strong reaction to an altercation caught on tape.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – A lifeguard and a 17-year-old body boarder at the Topaz Jetty in Redondo Beach got into a verbal altercation after the body boarder, Thomas, placed his boogie board on the trash can to avoid getting it sandy. According to the video, the lifeguard then told Thomas to remove his board, and he complied. The argument ensued after Thomas said "I didn't know it was a crime to put your board on a trash can," as seen in the video.
The teenager in the video told the lifeguard, "Dude, I'm going to go home and not remember this, I'm not going to care about anything you said today. You're wasting your time." However, it's stirred up Reddit along with a local Redondo Beach Facebook group. Those in the Redondo Beach Residents Facebook group have reacted strongly to the video, with arguments in favor of the lifeguard, and the teenager. Some of the comments include:
- "I would be embarrassed if that kid were my child. If that kid didn't want sand on his boogie board, he should've placed it on a towel or blanket that he brought beforehand. The sense of entitlement of the younger generation is appalling."
- Sheesh!!! I don't know what happened before the filming started but i find the lifeguard to be an a##. #cantwealljustgetalong"
- "I want that lifeguard fired and I intend to see that he's at a minimum reprimanded.
I'm so impressed with that young man keeping his composure against that psychotic bully. I'd have said far worse had that son of a bitch assaulted me in such an outrageously aggressive manner. Because of a typical teenage-style (of any generation) flippant comment said to his friends after COMPLYING with the request to move his board. Un.Accept.Able. No. Just absolutely no." - ""Nobody cares about you," "I know more than you," and "I will get in your face." These types of comments aren't constructive and only serve to escalate a situation. That said, it's easy for us to pick apart his behavior in a video, but it's entirely different to be a participant in that type of situation."
- "I find it disturbing that the lifeguard became so fixated on something that wasn't a safety issue."
Patch called the Los Angeles County Fire Department's Lifeguard Division, but they were not available for comment.
