"It is an inclusive and diverse body that represents the many voices in the community and driven by the desire to improve trust and transparency between the RBPD and those who live, work and visit the city," police said in a news release. "This board has commissioned efforts that support the disabled community, faith-based groups, victims of crime and various illnesses."

The group held its first Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration in January and donations raised during that event funded the two scholarships.

"The event not only celebrated the life, legacy and leadership of Dr. King but a memorial bench was unveiled and remains in front of the Redondo Beach Police Department," police said.

Two students who demonstrated academic excellence and have additionally proven to represent the beliefs of Dr. King were selected, police said. The recipients of the first annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship are RUHS seniors Nadia Stodder and Rose Malki.

"The Redondo Beach Police Department and Redondo Beach Police Foundation congratulate the recipients of these scholarships and wish them and the entire graduating class of 2020 great success," police said.
