Man Sentenced For Murder At South Bay Gas Station

The shooting in Redondo Beach left one dead and one injured.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – A 21-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for a gang-related shooting near a Redondo Beach gas station that left one man dead and another injured.

Erik Martinez, of Lawndale, was sentenced immediately after pleading no contest Wednesday to one count each of second-degree murder and attempted murder. He also admitted gang and gun allegations, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Mike Cortez, 19, of Lawndale, was pronounced dead at the scene of the June 16, 2016, shooting on the corner of Inglewood and Marine avenues. A second man was shot in the stomach, but survived.

Detectives caught up with Martinez about 8 p.m. the day after the shooting in the area of Daisy Avenue and 10th Street in Long Beach and arrested him, according to Redondo Beach police. He has remained behind bars since then.
