Person Allegedly Armed With Knife Fatally Shot By Torrance Police

Officers initially utilized various less-lethal options, but the person continued toward them, police said.

REDONDO BEACH, CA – A person allegedly armed with a knife was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Torrance Friday. The shooting occurred about 8:50 a.m. in the 20000 block of Hawthorne Boulevard, said Torrance police Sgt. Ronald Harris.

Officers went to the location on "a service call involving a subject brandishing a knife in the area of Planet Fitness," he said.

"Responding officers contacted the subject, who refused to comply with commands," the sergeant said. "Officers initially utilized various less-lethal options, but the subject continued toward them. The subject continually refused to comply, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred."

The suspect died at the scene, Harris said. Information was not immediately released on the person's gender, age or identity.

Harris said "edged weapons" were recovered at the scene.
