I attended the Torrance Chamber’s Women’s Leadership Luncheon yesterday afternoon. The featured speaker was Eve Irvine, the new Torrance Chief of Police, and OMG, she had us in hysterics relating her experiences as a law enforcement officer. The event also honored four outstanding women in the community: Athena Award: Leslie Cortez, City of Torrance; Community Catalyst Award: Andrea Sala, El Camino College Foundation; Inspirational Leader Award: Mary Kingston, Providence Little Company of Mary Torrance Medical Center; and South Bay Spirit Award: Claudine Garcia, The Promotions Dept. All I can say is, WOW – these are kickass women doing amazing work!
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund brought The Wall that Heals to Gardena City Hall on Tuesday, April 3. The Wall that Heals, a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC, and a 75 foot mobile education center was escorted into Gardena by approximately 100 motorcycles from the Veterans Affair Medical Center in Long Beach. The Wall that Heals will be open to the public from Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. through Sunday, April 8 at 2 p.m., 24 hours a day. The Manhattan Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Young Professional Council presents the popular Speed Networking tonight, Thursday, April 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the Shade Rooftop. Waterfront Education is offering a fun filled 3 day/2 night Excursion to Catalina Island Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8. There is so much to do and see as nature’s classroom is extended across the channel. This excursion is designed for all ages and the facility is large enough to divide participants into age appropriate groups for activities. Highlights include fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, tide pools, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding, archery and more. The learning adventure begins during the boat ride to the island. Discovery Leaders will identify and instruct on sea life and birds encountered enroute. Ocean weather, tides and the importance of conservation is also discussed with students. The 2018 Universe Multicultural Film Festival takes place Friday, April 6 through Sunday, April 8. Riviera Village presents First Fridays on April 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. This free, monthly event is the place to be every first Friday! West Basin Municipal Water District continues the FREE Rain Barrel Distribution Program on Saturday, April 7 from 8 a.m. to noon at Mira Costa High School. Help conserve water with a FREE rain Barrel! You can be more water efficient by collecting and using rainwater in your garden. Rain barrels also help reduce the amount of water that flows into storm drains and waterways. Participants must meet eligibility requirements and register in advance, Rain barrels are distributed on a first come, first served basis. No walk-ins will be allowed. You know you can speak Spanish, at least a little bit, but who can you practice with so that you can improve? The Redondo Beach North Branch Library offers Spanish Language Practice. The practice sessions are on Mondays, April 9 and May 7 from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. and are led by facilitator Nichols Brown. Participants need to already know a little Spanish to participate. The sessions are free program and open to the public. The Torrance Art Museum is looking for volunteers to join their team! Volunteers are one of the richest resources at the Torrance Art Museum. The museum offers a variety of volunteer opportunities ranging from meeting the public at the information desk, serving as an educational docent and gallery guide, to working behind the scenes installing art exhibits. Whatever your skills and interests are, there is a good chance they have a place for you. El Segundo Museum of Art has put out a Call for Artwork for the first Photo Festival, This is Awkward. The Festival will take place on Friday, May 4 and Saturday, May 5. How do you define awkward? Submit your photo or photo-based artwork that explores the theme of awkward. Submissions will be counted on a first-come, first serve basis starting on April 9. Please note that framed submissions cannot exceed 18” x 24” x 3”. Submissions will remain open until April 28 or until all spaces are filled. No more than two (2) submissions per artist.
