The City of Manhattan Beach and Skechers present the annualManhattan Beach Open Tennis Tournament Thursday, July 7 through Sunday, July 10. Take your game to the next level or put your practice into play at this classic South Bay sporting event! All the action takes place at the Live Oak Park Tennis Facility, Mira Costa High School and Manhattan Country Club. From Men’s and Women’s Open Singles and Doubles Divisions to Amateur Divisions, the tournament is sure to provide a fun-filled weekend of competition at its finest. The event features:

The Redondo Beach Pier Association presents the Summer of Music Concert Series every Thursday and Saturday evening from6 to 8 p.m. starting July 2 and running through September 3. These concerts are free to the public, so grab a few beach chairs and gather your family, friends and neighbors for a casual, relaxing evening of entertainment the South Bay way. Concerts on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays will take place at the Octagon where the pier meets the International Boardwalk below Kincaid’s; all other concerts will take place at the end of the pier. The Torrance Police Department is offering a FREE 12 hourWomen’s Self-Defense Seminar on Friday, July 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, July 9 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This course is a comprehensive class for women that teaches awareness, prevention, risk and risk avoidance. There will be hands on self-defense techniques taught. This seminar is reserved for residents, employees or members of civic groups in the city of Torrance. The class is restricted to attendees 14 years of age and older. For those ages 14 and 15, a mother or other female guardian must attend the class as well (or at minimum be present during the class). For those 16 and 17 years old, a parent or guardian must sign a waiver, but need not be present. The first class session will be a classroom presentation and the second day will be the practical application. Wear comfortable clothing like sweats or leggings to cover the knees, and athletic shoes. This program is instructed by certified members of the Torrance Police Department and is held at the Torrance Police Department. The Automobile Driving Museum will host a Collector Car Appreciation Day Cruise In on Saturday, July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring your collector car to the Museum and connect with other area collectors. The annual Jayo Invitational & Art at the Beach will take place on Saturday, July 9 at Dockweiler State Beach. The Jayo Invitational is a beach event featuring the Art at the Beach art auction along with beach sports including the country’s most prestigious Celebrity-Pro-Am Beach Volleyball event. It is a best-of-brand event celebrating the California lifestyle of promoting health and wellness that combines the world of sports and fitness, art and music. Proceeds from the Jayo Invitational are allocated to charitable organizations that work to aid children in the advancement of health and education. Art at the Beach, sponsored by Barefoot Wine, is a unique art auction that takes place steps from the sand in the Beach Club during the Jayo Celebrity Pro-Am. The auction is dedicated to art inspired by the ocean. Curated by Holly Socrates of the Holly Socrates Gallery, the auction presents pieces for bidding starting at 50% of value. Proceeds benefit public school enrichment programs. The 2016 Art at the Beach auction will feature over 15 artists and be catered by Lido Di Manhattan. It’s a full day of fun in the sun!

The Manhattan Beach Chamber presents the third annual Bite at the Beach on Saturday, July 9. This food and craft beer pairing event will take place at the MBS Media Campus in Manhattan Beach from 3 to 6 p.m. with special VIP entrance beginning at 2 p.m. Now in its third year, Bite at the Beach aims to highlight culinary delights from around the South Bay and the many local, craft breweries. Guests will receive a plate and glass for the event at the entrance and have the opportunity to enjoy as many tastes from the paired restaurants and breweries as desired. Lady of Magic presents Stars of Magic on Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m. at the Hermosa Beach Community Center Second Story Theater. Hosted by Sisuepahn Phila, the event takes place the second Saturday of each month and features award winning magicians that have perform at the Magic Castle, Penn & Teller’s ‘Fool Us’ and on America’s Got Talent. El Segundo Museum of Art presents Family Day: The Sound of MATTER on Sunday, July 10 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This Family Day, reimagine the way sounds are created with artist Jorge Espinosa. Experiment and play with familiar objects like beads and rubber bands to construct one-of-a-kind sound sculptures. All materials will be provided. Please be aware that this workshop will involve small objects, tools (hammers and nails), and delicate recording equipment. While the activity will be a lot of fun for all ages, we encourage parent supervision for younger visitors. As always, admission is FREE! The Revolution presents Erotic City: A Tribute to Prince on Sunday, July 10 at 6 p.m. at the James Armstrong Theater. Erotic City is a live, adult event that reinvents itself every 15 to 20 minutes with a new story line. With plots taken from the song titles of Prince, these mini-stories, scandalous situations and shocking twists will make fans of Empire and Scandal take note. The City of Manhattan Beach presents the annual Concerts in the Park series kicking off Sunday, July 10 and running throughSeptember 4. The series is a summer-long event held at Polliwog Park and takes place every Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.Concerts in the Park has featured such artists as the Doo-Wah Riders, Nathan Shrake, Elvis and Beatles tribute Bands, as well as a host of other talented musicians. Every year, The Hyperion Outfall Serenaders, the ‘Official Band of Manhattan Beach’, opens the series. These performances are free to the public. There are no dogs, barbecues or wheeled vehicles allowed at any time in the concert area. Umbrellas and pop-up tents may be set up before and after the concert but once the concert begins, you will be required to take them down. This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. The first of these performances will take place in Hermosa Beach this weekend. Cymbeline, directed by Cylan Brown, is an action-adventure-fairy-tale-romance! Shakespeare tells an epic romantic tale filled with magical potions, dastardly villains, ghosts, gods and lost princes. Othello, directed by Stephanie Coltrin, is an emotionally gripping thriller, where gossip turns friendships rancid, and rumor brutally murders innocence. Othello is as unflinching in its power as it is in its heartbreak. The performances are scheduled as follows:

Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are free and open to the public. The City of El Segundo Recreation & Parks Department is proud to present the 2016 Summer Concerts in the Park Seriessponsored by Chevron. Beach Cities Health District presents Zumba in the Park, everyMonday from July 11 through August 15, as part of the FREE Summer Fitness Series. Get ready to dance your way into shape this summer! This FREE community-wide event brings together the community, fitness and fun! Beach Cities Health District now offers FREE Mindfulness Drop-Inthe first Wednesday (that’s July 13) of each month at 5:30 p.m.Take 30 minutes to downshift and practice mindfulness techniques. Whole Foods Market and the Humane Society of the United States teamed up with the filmmakers behind the new documentary At the Fork to bring a Private Screening of the film to Torrance’s AMC Rolling Hills 20 on Wednesday, July 13. Omnivore filmmaker John Papola and his vegetarian wife, Lisa, go behind the scenes to learn how animals are raised for consumption in the U.S. This documentary provides a transparent look into the complex world of animal agriculture – including the challenges and opportunities that exist within the current system – and shows how consumers’ purchasing decisions can directly impact farmers and how they raise their animals. This showing is part of a nationwide crowd-sourced effort to spark a national conversation about how animals are raised for food in America.
