The Manhattan Beach Fire Department will offer Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness Training tonight, Thursday, April 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Joslyn Center. When a large natural disaster occurs it is not uncommon for emergency personnel to not be able to respond to service for at least 72 hours. Are you prepared? This FREE presentation is open to the first 80 residents who have not completed the Map Your Neighborhood Training for their block. If you plan to attend, registration is requested. Vroom, vroom! The Cruise is back! Cruise at the Beach returns to Ruby’s Diner in Redondo Beach on Friday, April 15! The event was supposed to take place last Friday but was rained out. Open to the public, this free event happens every Friday night through October and features a gathering of vintage automobiles on display in the Ruby’s Diner parking lot from 4 to 8 p.m. Enthusiasts are encouraged to bring their hot rods, street rods and muscle cars and strut their stuff. A favorite with local car enthusiasts, this popular event has grown tremendously over the years and features vintage and classic cars from all over Southern California. The evening also features music, trivia, trophies and raffle. Take a stroll before or after dinner and marvel at this fine collection of classic automobiles. Big Lucky will be performing at the Nakano Theater on Friday April, 15 and Saturday April 16. The next Beach Cities Free Fitness Weekend takes place Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17. QUESTION: What’s better than breaking a healthy sweat at a top fitness studio? ANSWER: Doing it for free! These Free Fitness Weekends are a partnership between BCHD and local studios and gyms to provide opportunities for residents to be healthy and have fun being physically active. Free Fitness Weekends was designed by BCHD to introduce people of all income and ability levels to a wide variety of fitness offerings, including yoga, Pilates, cycling, strength training, boot camp and more. Over 25 fitness studios in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach have joined the community initiative. According to BCHD’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Lisa Santora, the overarching goal is to create a healthier beach community by promoting exercise and supporting local businesses. Some classes require pre-registration while others are available on a first come, first served basis. The Redondo Pier Association presents a FREE Martial Arts Demonstration of Shifu Feng-San Lee’s renowned Kung Fu/Qi Gong/Martial Arts group from Taiwan on Friday, April 15 at 6 p.m. at the end of the pier. The group will be perform a demonstration and introduce Pingshuai to attendees. This cultural event is being hosted/sponsored by local Redondo Beach resident Paul Kartsonis. Hermosa Beach Friends of the Parks presents Pets in the Park on Saturday, April 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Valley Park. Registration begins at 9:30 and the cost is $10 per family which includes a re-useable bag filled with pet samples and coupons. This event is open to all South Bay residents. This program is a local favorite that continues to grow every year. If your pet needs a checkup or vaccination, the Concierge Mobile Animal Hospital will be offering discounted shots- no appointment necessary. If you haven’t registered your pet with the city, you will have the opportunity to get them licensed with no penalty. Want to be a responsible pet owner but not sure of all Hermosa Beach laws? A Hermosa Beach Community Services Officer will be available to answer your questions and the esteemed Dr. Alice Villalobos will be on hand to share her Pet-etiquette tips with you. Behavioral problems or new puppy that needs some training? Some of the best trainers in the South Bay will be on hand to share pointers and lead your pup towards the path of excellent canine citizenship. If you are looking for a companion, on-site adoptions for cats, dogs and bunnies will be available. The Peter Zippi Foundation, Gone to the Dogs Rescue, Golden Retriever Rescue of Greater Los Angeles and Too Many Bunnies, will participating in the event. The Redondo Beach Pier Association hosts FREE Yoga on the Pier every third Saturday of each month through May 28, 2016 from 10 a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome to attend and take part in this all level yoga class where the International Boardwalk meets the Redondo Beach Pier (the octagon below Kincaid’s). Participants should bring a yoga mat, towel and bottled water. The community is invited to take part in the annual Samburu Project’s Walk for Water on Sunday, April 17 from 8 to 11 a.m. on the Strand in Hermosa Beach. The Walk for Water is a 4 mile walk (or run, bike or scoot!) along the beautiful and famous ocean-side Strand in Hermosa Beach. The event culminates with a delicious pancake breakfast and raffle at American Junkie Restaurant. The Walk is a fun, family oriented event that raises awareness about the world water crisis and funds the drilling of water wells. The first Walk took place in 2009 and has become a favorite activity of Los Angeles’ South Bay. Families, young adults, service clubs, students and local business teams all participate to support the efforts to provide easy access to clean, safe drinking water to communities throughout Samburu, Kenya. The Samburu people in northern Kenya do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. Women and girls often walk up to 12 miles a day in search of water. The Samburu Project offers a simple solution to an extraordinary problem by providing easy access to water to these communities through well drilling initiatives. Since its inception in 2005, The Samburu Project has drilled 83 wells bringing clean, safe drinking water to over 80,000 people! Children’s Orchard is hosting a Beach Clean Up in honor of Earth Month on Sunday, April 17 in Redondo Beach. The community is invited to meet on the beach at the Redondo Beach Pier at 9 a.m. Attendees will be provided with trash bags and water bottles and will receive a $5 gift card for Children’s Orchard. Every Tuesday night, Saint Rocke presents Unplugged. The event showcases 10 Los Angeles singer/songwriters and artists of all kinds. There are six candidates vying for three places on the Torrance City Council. Two of the candidates are current Council Members whose terms will expire, Mike Griffiths and Geoffrey Rizzo. The four other candidates are Genghmun Eng, Milton Herring, Leilani Kimmel-Dagostino and Asam Sheikh. The moderator for the evening will be Marc Danziger from the Southwood Homeowners Association. The candidates will each be asked the same questions and will give their answers without any debate between them. All residents are urged to attend as three of these candidates will be joining the governing body of the City of Torrance.
