South Bay Weekend Guide August 11, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Summertime is prime vacation season - the kids are out of school, the weather usually cooperates and many destinations offer incentives you just can’t pass up. I just booked a fly fishing trip to Montana and can’t wait to hop on that plane! There are countless great reasons to travel, but you know what the best part of taking a vacation is? When it’s over, we residents of the South Bay get to come home to some of the best beaches in the world. I remember a trip I took with a group of friends that live in different parts of the country. As we said our goodbyes at the airport, several of them made comments such as, “Back to the grind” or “Back to the city” or “Back to the cold”. To commiserate, I said, “Back to the beach.” They all stopped and stared at me, and that’s when I knew……living here in the South Bay, it’s kinda like being on vacation all the time……

This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of Cymbeline and Othello will take place during July and August. Cymbeline, directed by Cylan Brown, is an action-adventure-fairy-tale-romance! Shakespeare tells an epic romantic tale filled with magical potions, dastardly villains, ghosts, gods and lost princes. Othello, directed by Stephanie Coltrin, is an emotionally gripping thriller, where gossip turns friendships rancid, and rumor brutally murders innocence. Othello is as unflinching in its power as it is in its heartbreak. The next performances will take place at Polliwog Park located at 1601 Manhattan Beach Boulevard on Friday, August 12 at 7pm: Othello and Saturday, August 13 at 7pm: Cymbeline. Guests should bring chairs or blankets – low beach chairs are nicest for those behind you. It also tends to get chilly and a little damp. It’s a Greek amphitheater type of venue in the center of park – not visible from the street. You have to park a little ways away and walk in. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are free and open to the public. All seating is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/wp/.
