South Bay Weekend Guide August 18, 2016
The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Can you believe the school year has already begun in some school districts? What a bummer. There are still so many fantastic events scheduled through Labor Day Weekend and lots of kids/families will miss out because of homework and activity schedules. There should be a law against starting school before Labor Day….. it’s so un-American! How about changing the school year to coincide with the seasons? Kids could get out of school on June 20 and return September 21. Just a thought…. In the meantime, there are all sorts of fun events happening around the South Bay this weekend. I hope to see you out there!
LAST CHANCE UNTIL NEXT YEAR!!! The community is invited to attend the El Segundo Art Walk tonight, Thursday, August 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. Located in the Downtown and Smoky Hollow districts, over thirty creative El Segundo businesses will open their doors for studio tours and become a pop-up gallery displaying original artwork of Los Angeles based artists. ESAW pairs artists with local businesses to display their work on the premises. Yes, it is an art walk, but the art is only half of the attraction. The venues are what make the event so unique. El Segundo has an abundance of remarkable and historic architecture, most of which house businesses not open to the general public. The opportunity to gain access to these distinctive spaces makes for an extraordinary experience. The evening features fine art, live music, great food and studio tours. It’s fun and it’s FREE! El Segundo Art Walk will take place the third Thursday evening of the summer months – June 16, July 21 and August 18. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.elsegundoartwalk.com/.

This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of Cymbeline and Othello will take place during July and August. Cymbeline, directed by Cylan Brown, is an action-adventure-fairy-tale-romance! Shakespeare tells an epic romantic tale filled with magical potions, dastardly villains, ghosts, gods and lost princes. Othello, directed by Stephanie Coltrin, is an emotionally gripping thriller, where gossip turns friendships rancid, and rumor brutally murders innocence. Othello is as unflinching in its power as it is in its heartbreak. The final South Bay performance of the season (Cymbeline) will take place at Terranea Resort, located at 100 Terranea Way, tonight, Thursday, August 18 at 7 p.m. No outside food permitted. Food and beverage available for purchase onsite. $10 parking. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are free and open to the public. All seating is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/wp/.
