South Bay Weekend Guide August 4, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

The Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament, one of the biggest events of the summer, traditionally took place on the Saturday and Sunday of the International Surf Festival. A few years ago, they scheduled the tournament for Wednesday and Thursday due to disorderly crowds fueled by underage drinking. Many people were not pleased by the change for any number of reasons, so this year, they’ve scheduled the tournament for Thursday and Friday. This middle ground could be the right solution…..let’s see how it goes.

The annual International Surf Festival starts today, Thursday, August 4 and runs through Sunday, August 7. The host city for this year’s Festival is the City of Torrance. The event promotes the four South Bay beach cities, the world’s best lifeguard service, and physical fitness for thousands of participants. The festival kicks off with the Charlie Saikley Volleyball Tournament (better known as 6-man!) on Thursday, August 4 at 9 a.m. at the Manhattan Beach pier. The Los Angeles County Lifeguard Medal of Valor Dinner is scheduled for Thursday, August 4 at 6 p.m. at the Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach. Tickets may be purchased at the door if not sold out. On Friday, August 5, the LA County Lifeguard Championships take place at the Manhattan Beach Pier beginning at 7 p.m. Events include U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and L.A. County Lifeguard rescue demonstrations, run relays and other lifeguard competitions. Saturday and Sunday will be packed with events all day long. The fun-filled weekend includes surfing championships, the Dick Fitzgerald two-mile beach run, sand soccer, the Velzy-Stevens Pier to Pier Paddleboard Championship, sand castle contest, beach volleyball and several other activities. The International Surf Festival is presented by BEACHSPORT.org, the Chambers of Commerce and the Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Department of Beaches and Harbors.
