South Bay Weekend Guide February 11, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area

Valentine’s Day is Sunday and Presidents Day is Monday….so we have a long, romantic, holiday weekend ahead! If you haven’t made plans to get away for a few days with that special someone, never fear – there are plenty of fun things you can do together right here in the South Bay and there is certainly no shortage of romantic places to eat. I’ve recently added several restaurants to my Dine Time page so take a moment and browse my recommendations here:http://www.southbaybyjackie.com/dine-time.php.

Gus Gallery is hosting a Photo Exhibit by photographer/Instagrammer Virginia McNeely at GUS Vintage Goods in Riviera Village. GUS carries vintage clothes, art, jewelry and other merchandise in the front portion the shop, while a small room in the back serves as a gallery. Owner Kim Stoneman regularly features the work of local artists and student artists and the gallery is open during regular store hours. Virginia’s photographs were taken using her iphone or ipad – some are traditionally printed and framed, others are printed on canvas – but it’s her processing method that makes them extraordinary. To view her work, visit her Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/ginnigabu/. Ginni’s show will be on display for the next 4 weeks so make a point to stop by and check it out. Her prints are available for purchase. GUS Vintage Goods is located at 209 Avenue I in Redondo Beach.

Artist Gary Sweeney is selling his childhood home in Manhattan Beach – but before he hands over the keys, it will spend its final days as an art exhibit entitled, A Manhattan Beach Memoir: 1945 – 2015. Sweeney has mounted large prints of his family photos all over the exterior of the structure and will be giving guided tours every Wednesday in February from 4 to 7 p.m. The photographs were taken by his father, Mike Sweeney, an amateur photographer, and document the 70 years the family lived under that roof. Assuming who ever bought the house would tear it down, Gary took the opportunity to remind people what Manhattan Beach used to be like with this utterly unique tribute. If you can’t attend one of the guided tours, you can always walk, or drive by, and view this enchanting, ephemeral farewell. For additional information, visit the website at http://garysweeneyart.com/. The Sweeney home is located at 320 35th Street in Manhattan Beach. I’m doing the tour next Wednesday and Gary will be our guest on The South Bay Show next Thursday!
