The Weekend Guide is updated every Thursday morning, so check in each week or, you can sign up for our email list or RSS feed

The weather has been so gorgeous, it entices you to skip work, get outside and play…..and that’s exactly what I’m thinking as I write this. Can you believe the water temp is already in the 70s?!? I should be out paddle boarding, swimming or sailing instead of being stuck in my office. I don’t play hooky often, but I’m seriously tempted. Every now and then, shouldn’t we all sneak in some extra time to enjoy the many coastal recreations the South Bay has to offer? I vote YES!
Hermosa Local will host their Summer Kick-Off Event sponsored by Blupins tonight, Thursday, July 28 from 9 to 11 p.m. at American Junkie. The event brings together the local community for some summertime fun and to launch the South Bay’s hottest new nightlife navigation app, Blupins. Attendees can download the Blupins app for American Junkie drink specials on tap tonight from 9 to 10:30 p.m. at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/blupins/id655562590?mt=8. Blupins allows you to see what’s happening at your favorite locations in the South Bay. Blupins was created in order to find out what the scene is like wherever you may go in the South Bay. This app is strictly user-driven so you get the authentic feel behind what is happening at the hot spot downtown. Real-time reviews of local nightlife are submitted exclusively by your peers, for you and your peers. It’s a revolutionary way to get real-time relevance and insight into local bars, including wait time, crowd, music, DJ’s and more! For additional information, visit the website at http://www.hermosalocal.com/. American Junkie is located at 68 Pier Avenue, Hermosa Beach.
dineLA Restaurant Week continues! This bi-annual dining event was established to introduce diners to the extensive assortment of restaurants in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. The event takes place over 14 consecutive days and runs from July 18 through July 31. Local foodies and visitors to the area will have the opportunity to enjoy a selection of specially priced prix fixe menus from some of LA’s best restaurants during this this period. It should come as no surprise that a variety of restaurants throughout the South Bay will be participating in this culinary event. Some of the restaurants will feature lunch, some will offer dinner and some will present both, so be sure to check the website at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/. Diners may make a reservation online at http://discoverlosangeles.com/restaurantweekv2/index.jsp or contact the restaurant directly. Due to the popularity of this event, advance reservations are strongly recommended. Walk-ins are welcome but there is no guarantee they can be accommodated.
This season, Shakespeare by the Sea presents two brand new productions staged at venues throughout the South Bay. Performances of Cymbeline and Othello will take place during July and August. Cymbeline, directed by Cylan Brown, is an action-adventure-fairy-tale-romance! Shakespeare tells an epic romantic tale filled with magical potions, dastardly villains, ghosts, gods and lost princes. Othello, directed by Stephanie Coltrin, is an emotionally gripping thriller, where gossip turns friendships rancid, and rumor brutally murders innocence. Othello is as unflinching in its power as it is in its heartbreak. The next South Bay performances will take place in Torrance at Wilson Park Gazebo located at 2200 Crenshaw Boulevard on Friday, July 29 at 7pm (Othello) and Saturday, July 30 at 7pm (Cymbeline). Open grassy area by the gazebo – come early to get close. Sloped lawn gets steeper the further you get from the playing space. Low beach chairs or blankets work best. Warm layered clothing recommended. Shakespeare by the Sea is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ignite imagination, promote literacy and offer a venue for technical and performing artists to exercise their passion. So grab a few lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic basket and settle in for a theater production by the greatest playwright of all time. These shows are free and open to the public. All seating is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information, visit the website at http://www.shakespearebythesea.org/wp/.
The City of Torrance Community Services Department and local Homeowners Associations are proud to sponsor Movies in the Park with a screening of My Big Hero 6 on Saturday, July 30 at Paradise Park located at 5006 Lee Street. These movie nights will take place at various parks throughout the city this summer. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Pack up a picnic basket, blanket and lawn chairs and join friends and neighbors for an evening of family-friendly cinematic entertainment as the parks convert into outdoor movies theaters. Each event will feature a different movie beginning at dusk (around 8 p.m.) so bring a jacket, popcorn, cocoa and snacks and join in the fun!

This annual event is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness by generating support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and sending a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. Residents are encouraged to organize block parties and other social events. National Night Out has proven to be an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program.
