The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

Some of you may have noticed South Bay by Jackie.com has a spiffy new look. We’re coming up on our five year anniversary in July and felt it was time to freshen things up. We’ve increased the site width, added the new ‘So Bae’ page for local youth, adjusted some of the drop down menus, and added new header photos. We also have a groovy new logo! The Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce will host the monthlyNetwork Cafe at Jimmy’s Bar & Grill today, Thursday, June 9 from11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Enjoy lunch while making new acquaintances and catching up with old friends. Hermosa Beach is about to get a new Mayor! The public is encouraged to attend the Formal Appointment of Hany Fangary as Mayor of the City of Hermosa Beach tonight, Thursday, June 9 at 6 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers. The inaugural After Hours @ the ADM will take place tonight, Thursday, June 9 from 6 to 9 p.m. The kickoff event will feature several local artists showcasing their medium, including, Kristine Schomaker Michael Harriel Photography, Meex1, Bruce Gray, Joe Natoli from Boiling Point Creative and Princesa Venegas. A DJ will spin tunes as you peruse the museum and witness a live graffiti art demonstration on a car by MEEX1. Drinks will be available for purchase. Bring the entire family as this event is appropriate for all ages. A suggested donation of $10 per adult, $8 per senior, $5 children 11 and older is requested. Children under 11 free get in free. El Segundo Museum of Art hosts the Senior Drawing Club-Just Draw on Friday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. In this informal drawing club, attendees will start with warm-up drawing exercises and then take inspiration from the featured artworks. No artistic experience is required and all supplies will be provided. As always, admission is FREE! FYI……The Torrance Police Department Traffic Division will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Friday, June 10, between the hours of 8:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment with officers checking drivers for proper licensing delaying motorists only momentarily. When possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving, which now accounts for a growing number of impaired driving crashes. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

The Environmental Priorities Network is sponsoring its eleventh annual Solar and Green Homes Tour in Torrance and the Beach Cities on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Using the sun to produce electricity from a rooftop solar photovoltaic system is a powerful action one can take to reduce the dangers of the climate crisis and save money as well. These homes on the tour have many other environmental features like solar hot water heating, low voltage lighting, drought-tolerant landscaping, rainwater capture and plug-in electric vehicles. This event has already sold out but I’ll mention it anyway….. The annual Manhattan Wine Auction will take place on Saturday, June 11. Hosted by the Manhattan Country Club, the Manhattan Wine Auction is the largest charity wine auction in Southern California. The evening features wine and food tastings, live and silent auctions, live entertainment, music and dancing. Over 80 world-class vintners, distilleries and breweries and 35 South Bay restaurants will offer guests an array of delicious bites and beverages. Second Sundays at Two concert series presents Pianist Robert Thies on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. Pianist Robert Thies is an artist renowned for his consummate musicianship and poetic temperament. He first captured worldwide attention in 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the only American pianist to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn’s famed triumph in Moscow in 1958.
