South Bay Weekend Guide March 3, 2016

The South Bay by Jackie Weekend Guide offers comprehensive coverage of the greater South Bay area.

This Weekend Guide is meant to serve as a reminder for the special events happening around town. There are also numerous recurring events that don’t make it into the Guide every week – things like Farmers’ Markets, Trivia Nights and Free Yoga Classes. The Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will host the State of the City address today, Thursday, March 3. The event will take place at the Beach House Hotel with Mayor Carolyn Petty presiding. A light appetizer buffet and no-host bar will be set up at 6:30 p.m. The presentation by Mayor Petty will begin at 7:15, followed by a reception. The public is invited to celebrate the Grand Opening of The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf®’s new Torrance store today, Thursday, March 3 at 3 p.m. Senior Vice President of Global Brand Strategy, Adam Tabachnikoff and Councilman Joe Buscaino will officially debut the new drive-thru location to the community. The Grand Opening celebration will take place all week long from Monday, February 29 through Friday, March 4. The event celebrates the official launch of their Kickstarter campaign and will feature live music by Hawaiian reggae band J.M.D. There will be plenty of giveaways, drink specials and good vibes! Ambrosia’s David Pack announces the Beato Band Album Release Concert & Debut Video tonight, Thursday, March 3 at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach. David Pack, noted hit-maker with the popular 70s/80s band Ambrosia, is excited to announce the debut performance of his new group Beato Band. Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach will host the album release concert tonight at 8 p.m. and the set will feature original songs and classics from the debut self-titled Beato Band album which was released on February 26. David will open the evening with a special acoustic performance of some solo and Ambrosia hits and favorites. The band is encouraging their friends, fans and classmates to assemble at Saint Rocke at 10 p.m. tonight for a group photo before the show! The City of Hermosa Beach is offering two CERT Basic Training classes during the month of March. Do you know how to help your loved ones, neighbors, co-workers in the aftermath of a disaster? HbCERT is a volunteer group comprised of residents of Hermosa Beach sworn in and authorized by the City of Hermosa Beach as Disaster Service Worker volunteers who provide relief to victims of disasters by assisting the Hermosa Beach Fire and Police Department in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from emergencies. The class will cover disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster first aide and CERT organization during an emergency. Participants must attend all classes and complete the final in order to graduate. These classes are FREE but space is limited – don’t wait to register! Sea LAB presents Spring Fest on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to noon as part of the monthly Fishtivities. Join the SEA Lab to kick off spring time! Meet and touch some of the local marine life on a self-guided touch tank tour and discover treasures in the “kelp forest” maze. Attendees can tap into their inner rhythm with the Free to be Me Drum Circle and learn to play different percussion instruments beginning at 11 a.m. and then help the staff feed the fish in the Tidepool Tank at noon. The South Coast Botanic Garden presents the annual Cherry Blossom Festival on Saturday, March 5. The Garden will be open from noon to 4 p.m. and features a variety of events included with general admission. Feel free to bring food, blankets and chairs and have a picnic under the Cherry Blossoms on the Upper Meadows. A self-guided tour and information sheet will be available. The Garden will be partnering with the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute (GVJCI) to provide a number of cultural performances and activities. Merry melodies and catchy toons will fill the air on Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. as the El Segundo Concert Band presentsLooney Tunes from Looney Toons, a FREE concert featuring music from cartoons and video games. Maestro Steven Allen Fox stated, “When I first began working with the El Segundo Concert Band around thirteen years ago, we presented a concert performance like this. It was a blast and audiences loved it! The Manhattan Beach CERT Association will be offering an Emergency Preparedness Training Course beginning March 5. These classes are designed to educate participants on what to do in the event of a major disaster. It’s not just about having enough food and water on hand. A variety of topics includes medical care, fire suppression and search and rescue in addition to personal and family preparedness. Catastrophes strike when least expected; earthquakes, tsunamis, wild fires, epidemics, terrorist attacks. It is in everyone’s best interest to be equipped to cope with these emergency situations. Upon completion of the course, you will receive a photo ID and certificate. Classes will be held on Saturday, March 5, 12 and 19 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Public Works Training Room at 3621 Bell Avenue in Manhattan Beach. El Segundo Museum of Art (ESMoA) will host an All-Candidates Forum to inform and engage the public about the upcoming election for the El Segundo City Council starting at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9. The non-partisan event will include the five candidates vying for three open City Council seats. The public is encouraged to attend and engage the candidates for a lively discussion. Steve Napolitano, Senior Deputy to Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and a former Manhattan Beach Councilman, will moderate the discussion. The format will keep things lively, concise and engaging, with a brief opening statement from each of candidates and short responses to questions from the audience and Mr. Napolitano. Candidates for the upcoming City Council election who are planning to attend include:

•Drew Boyles, Chairman of El Segundo Economic Development Advisory Council
•Don Brann, former City Council member and former state trustee of Inglewood Unified School District

Key issues facing El Segundo are expected to be the focus of the discussion at the All-Candidates Forum. THE BOMBERS ARE COMING, THE BOMBERS ARE COMING!!! The Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour is coming to the Western Museum of Flight at Torrance Airport Friday, April 22 through Tuesday, April 26 and volunteers are needed! Restored WWII bombers B-17, B-25, B-26 and an F-51 will return to Zamperini Field for six days of aviation history, tours and rides. The Collings airplanes will visit over the weekend and they expect a HUGE turnout. The event cannot be held without the help of local volunteers. Sign up – it’ll be fun!
