Critically acclaimed artist MCCAW will host the Opening Reception:The MCCAW Collective, on Thursday, November 12 from 5 to 9 p.m. For the first time in more than a decade, highly acclaimed American Expressionist Dan McCaw, his sons John McCaw and Danny McCaw, invite the public into their private working studio for a very special exhibition of select new works. The MCCAW objective examines, contemplates and directs a fresh look at contemporary issues such as the relationship between art and reality, memory and fantasy, symbols and anthropology, existential ideas and human psychology. The World Premier of the documentary film MONEY MAN: Frank Vanderlip and the Birth of the Federal Reserve will be shown at the Palos Verdes Performing Arts’ Norris Theater on Friday, November 13 in Rolling Hills Estates as a benefit for the Palos Verdes Historical Society. Most people don’t realize what an important influence the founder of Palos Verdes, Frank Vanderlip, had on the national stage. From very humble beginnings in Illinois, he rose to be the architect and founder of the Federal Reserve system, President of what is now Citibank, and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury. For no pay, he worked with the likes of J.P. Morgan, Jr. to sell war bonds to fund the U.S. effort in World War I to save Europe. A number of the people in the film are expected to attend the Premier. The VIP dinner will be held at the Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion at 5:30. Combination dinner and film tickets are $200. The next Beach Cities Free Fitness Weekend takes place Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15. These Fitness Weekends are a partnership between BCHD and local studios and gyms to provide opportunities for residents to be healthy and have fun being physically active! Free Fitness Weekends was designed by BCHD to introduce people of all income and ability levels to a wide variety of fitness offerings, including yoga, Pilates, cycling, strength training, boot camp and more. Over 25 fitness studios in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach have joined the community initiative. According to BCHD’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Lisa Santora, the overarching goal is to create a healthier beach community by promoting exercise and supporting local businesses. “The response we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive, and we want to thank all of the studios who have eagerly come aboard.” Some classes require pre-registration while others are available on a first come, first served basis. The Hermosa Cinema Society will screen Landfill Harmonic onSaturday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hermosa Community Theatre. Landfill Harmonic, a documentary about a children’s orchestra from Paraguay whom made all their instruments from literal trash, is the first in a series of screenings and events leading up to the first South Bay Film & Music Festival scheduled for June 2016.
