The next two weeks are going to be nutty…….there’s so much going on and it’s all good. Halloween has become one of the biggest events in the country and the amount of money it generates is astounding – it’s second only to Christmas. With that in mind, be sure to patronize our local retailers for all your Halloween needs! I’ve already been to Aardvark on Artesia Boulevard twice in the last week.
The Riviera Village Business Improvement District hosts the Monthly Mixer at Hennessey’s tonight, Thursday, October 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. All who live, work and enjoy Riviera Village are welcome to attend. It’s a great opportunity to mix and mingle, get to know others in the area and share ideas for the future! The event will take place on the back patio. There is no cover charge. Strand Brewing Company will celebrate the Grand Opening of their new facility and Tap Room all weekend long! The time has arrived and the original brewery that started the South Bay Craft Beer Scene is ready to officially open. Many have played a role in the Strand Brewing success story over the last 6 years. Now Rich and Joel are inviting everyone to come celebrate with them in their fantastic new 36,000 square foot facility. The event takes place all weekend long, from Friday, October 23 through Sunday, October 25 during normal tap room hours. Stop by, raise a pint, share a Strand story and see what the boys have been up to this past year. The Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce presents the Citizen of the Year Awards & Dinner Dance on Friday, October 23 at Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. The public is invited to join business, community and government leaders to honor the tradition of philanthropy on the Peninsula. The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with no-host cocktails and a silent auction, followed by an elegant dinner at 7 p.m., a live auction, Opportunity Drawing, awards presentation and dancing to a live band. Helaine and Steve Lopes will receive the R. Eric P. Allan Citizen of the Year Award for their many philanthropic and leadership contributions. The Volunteer Center will be honored as the Chamber’s Outstanding Nonprofit Organization for 2015 for their excellence in programming and breadth of community impact. Special Children’s League will receive the award for Outstanding Community Service Organization for 2015. Tickets are $150 each, with tables of 10 for $1,500. The Automobile Driving Museum hosts the first annual Halloween Monster Ball on Saturday, October 24 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. The event features cocktails, bites, awesome auction items, dancing, surprises and more! By all means, get in the Halloween spirit and wear a costume! The community is invited to attend and give a treat to a deserving child. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Los Angeles. Tickets are $150 per person or $175 at the door. The Environmental Priorities Network, a local South Bay volunteer organization, presents Creating Healthy, Just and Sustainable Food Systems, a public forum, on Saturday, October 24 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Pacific Unitarian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. The forum will explore how we can help create good food systems to replace our current industrial food system that is harmful to people and planet. From 9 to 10 a.m. attendees are invited to enjoy free, light refreshments and drinks as you visit tables with information from local groups involved in creating these good food systems. From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. speakers will lead discussions on these two systems of food production and how we can be part of the transition to more healthy, sustainable and just food systems. Jim Montgomery from LabelGMOs.org, DW Ferrell from Localism, Inc. and Rishi Kumar from The Growing Club will be speaking. From noon to 1:30 p.m. attendees can continue visiting tables, network with others and enjoy a healthy, organic lunch (for purchase) from Green Truck, a local, sustainable business whose mission is “Healing our Planet One Meal at a Time.” Local groups participating in the forum include EPN, LabelGMOs.org, The Growing Club, Slow Money Southern California, LB Made/LB Fresh, HoneyLove.org, Judy’s Homegrown, Weston A. Gallery H of Phantom Galleries LA presents the Opening Reception: Day of the Dead | Dia de los Muertos, a group exhibition on Saturday, October 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. Over thirty artists are participating in the exhibit on view through November 21, and curated by fine art photographer, Gloria Plascencia. Guests are encouraged to dress in Day of the Dead themed outfits, get your face painted and enjoy the festivities. A special dance performance will take place on opening night by Aztec Dance Yankuititl (new fire) as well as “Evoke the Spirit of Frida Kahlo”, a special poetry performance based on Frida Kahlo’s diary and the love letters she wrote to her husband, Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera played by actors Rachel McVey and Chris Lang from Theatrum Elysum at 7 p.m. on opening night. Dia de los Muertos – The Day of the Dead – is a holiday celebrated on November 1. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated. Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec rituals with Catholicism, brought to the region by the Spanish Conquistadores. Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Support local education and children with special needs by signing up for the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk. This special walk will take place on Sunday, October 25 and goes from the Manhattan Beach Pier to the Hermosa Beach Pier and back. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with the walk starting at 9 a.m. The annual SKECHERS Pier to Pier Friendship Walk is an awe-inspiring event that brings together all walks of life for one common purpose; to support children with special needs and education. The walk is produced by SKECHERS USA and presented by Nickelodeon. Online registration is $25 per person. On-site registration is $30. The event will also include a Kids Zone featuring bounce houses, children’s games and various booths. The whole family can participate in this annual walk along the shore! The City of Manhattan Beach Parks & Recreation Department, LA Car Guy and Skechers proudly present the 25 Annual Pumpkin Race on Sunday, October 25 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Pier. Never mind the Indy 500 and forget the Kentucky Derby – the hottest, most contested race of the year takes place right here in the South Bay! This national award-winning event is a favorite with locals and has been a Beach Cities tradition since 1990. Anyone can enter the race and Pumpkin Racecar kits are available for $20 at the Live Oak Park Tennis Office while supplies last. Pumpkin Racecar Kits are fun and easy to assemble and contain everything you needed to build a Pumpkin Racecar, including a medium-sized pumpkin. Free expert assistance, decorations and accessories are available at the event for those purchasing official kits. You may also make your own Pumpkin Racecar according to the Official Rules of the World Famous Pumpkin Race. The race is fun, easy and free to enter!
