Teen Killed in Redondo Beach Gas Station Shooting ID'd

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A man was hospitalized Friday with non-life- threatening injuries he suffered in a shooting that claimed another man's life in Redondo Beach, authorities said.

The man who was killed was 19-year-old Mike Cortez-Marquez, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter. His home town was not known.

The suspect remained at large, said Redondo Beach police Lt. Fabian Saucedo.

The shooting occurred at 4:01 p.m. Thursday near an Arco gas station at the intersection of Inglewood and Marine avenues, police said.

Witnesses told police that initially, two people were in a confrontation in the crosswalk at the intersection, Saucedo said. A third man became involved in the conflict, taking the side against the eventual shooter.

The shooter then pulled out a handgun and shot the two men "he was fighting with," Redondo Beach police Sgt. Shawn Freeman told ABC7.

Witness accounts indicated the victims seemed to know the shooter, Saucedo said.

Cortez-Marquez was pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics rushed the other shooting victim to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, according to Mark Winter, a division chief with the Redondo Beach Fire Department.

Saucedo said the surviving victim was in the ICU after surgery Thursday and was expected to live.

The suspect was described as between 18 and 20, with a thin build and a goatee, last seen wearing camouflage shorts and a black shirt, Saucedo said.

The shooter initially left the area on a skateboard that was subsequently recovered from a gutter in the area, police told CBS2.
