Advanced Ecology at the Marine Science Institute

MSI's new homeschool program encourages students to work cooperatively and use scientific equipment and interact with live animals.

Registration is open for Advanced Ecology Winter 2017.

The Marine Science Institute is a celebrated environmental education provider that emphasizes experiential learning and puts learners in contact with nature. Advanced Ecology is a newly designed homeschool program tailored to students who have previous experience with marine science. Students will work cooperatively in a team to use scientific equipment and interact with live animals. Each session combines learning on-site at MSI, a field trip, and a Discovery Voyage aboard our research vessel R/V Robert G. Brownlee.

For the Winter 2017 session, students will take an in-depth look at the scientific method and practice applying it to real hands-on field research. They will learn the process of the scientific method, while applying it to take wrackline data while exploring the marsh and beach at Pescadero State Beach. They will also take fish population data from species they catch in the San Francisco Bay aboard a voyage on the R/V Robert G. Brownlee. Students will use this data to formulate graphs in an effort to identify any potential trends. They will gain experience in presenting as they share their final graphs with their peers.
