Arrest Made In Massive SMC Condo Fire That Displaced More Than 150

FOSTER CITY, CA — A suspect has been arrested in connection with the six-alarm fire that tore through a Foster City condominium complex Sunday, displacing more than 150 residents and injuring four firefighters.

Authorities did not immediately release details about the charges or what led to the arrest.

Fire investigators said they determined the blaze was caused by an unattended gas grill located on a balcony.

The fire quickly spread through the condominium building, causing extensive damage and forcing a massive emergency response.

The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at 815 Sea Spray Ln. and escalated to six alarms, drawing firefighters from agencies across San Mateo County.

Crews battled the blaze for hours before shifting to a defensive strategy as flames spread through the structure.

More than 150 residents were displaced by the fire. No residents were injured, but four firefighters were hurt while battling the blaze. All are expected to make full recoveries.

Fire crews remained at the scene for several days extinguishing hot spots before officials declared the fire fully out.

The damaged building has been red-tagged as unsafe, and residents have not been allowed to return while officials assess the extent of the damage.

The American Red Cross has been assisting displaced residents with shelter and other services.

The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released additional details about the arrest.
