Ken Rhoads ‘Reuse Artist'
Ken is a Redwood City artist and a long time exhibiter in ART on the Square. We love his work, creating fabulous birdhouses and landscape pieces. While recycled anything is all the rage, Ken has been doing this fine work for years, and for a good cause, to boot. So, wood you please read on for a very interesting story about what led Ken on this journey to create his one of a kind art pieces?

The art of the birdhouse
My interest in art was first peaked by my High School art teacher, Mr. Larson. It took 30 plus years in the retail business before I got the bug again when I began creating one of a kind whimsical landscape pieces, as a reuse artist.
With a shop full of leftovers from many remodeling projects, I began to build birdhouses for my own landscaping project which quickly led to requests from family and friends. In 2003 I began to show my items on the Art and Craft circuit.
My medium is vintage architectural salvage from the many homes being razed in the San Francisco Bay area along with construction cast offs and found objects, also known as junk. Each of the pieces is totally handcrafted without the use of any plans or templates. Each evolves on itself until there is a personality that brings delight from my customers and clients. While my primary pieces are affordable homes for our feathered friends, I also do landscape pieces including water features, yard furniture, wall collages and mixed media assemblages. No two are ever alike and are each cataloged and signed by the artist.
My entries in the 2006 and 2007 'Birdhouse Bash' event supporting Child Advocates of Silicon Valley have won the coveted Best in Show award and along with pieces submitted in 2008 and 2009 have raised over $2700. for this worthwhile organization.

Do stop by and see Ken's amazing collection of art. See you all next Friday night.
And Remember to Always Follow your H'art!
