Shinnyo-en Temple Hosts Open House

Shinnyo-en, a Japanese Buddhist denomination, held an open house at their Redwood City temple Saturday for more than 500 neighbors and friends.

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, , a Japanese Buddhist denomination, held an open house at their Redwood City temple for more than 500 neighbors and friends.

The event included musical performances from the Europe Shomyo Ensemble, a guided mediation session, a traditional Japanese mactha tea offering and children’s activities. There was also a screening of the documentary film, Where the Ocean Meets the Sky, about the Shinnyo-en-sponsored annual Lantern Floating Hawai’i ceremony, which takes place every Memorial Day in Honolulu.

The members and staff of the Shinnyo-en U.S.A. Head Temple in Redwood City host this annual open house to express their appreciation for neighbors and nearby local organizations.

According to the organizers, Shinnyo-en values and celebrates the kindness and cooperation of people in the Redwood City area as they all work together for a community of harmony, peace, and mutual support.

Shinnyo-en is a Buddhist denomination established in Japan in the 1930s.  Its name means “a borderless garden of truth.”  It is a place for Buddhist training, in which all people regardless of age, gender, nationality, or religious background can cultivate their innate “Buddha nature,” the kernel of enlightenment existing in all beings.
