UPDATED: 'Shelter in Place' Order Lifted as Armed Suspect Surrenders

"He is now in our custody and we will work with social services and his loved ones to get him the critical assistance that he needs."

Update 1 p.m.:

Police say that they’ve arranged the safe surrender of an armed subject that led to an hours-long shelter in place order for San Mateo residents.

By 12:35 pm., the unidentified man was in custody, according to police.

“He is now in our custody and we will work with social services and his loved ones to get him the critical assistance that he needs,” police said. “The weapons have been seized by SMPD and the residence is now safe and secure.”

Police thanked nearby residents for their cooperation.

“SMPD wishes to especially thank nearby residents for their cooperation and patience, allowing us the time and ability to bring this incident to a peaceful resolve,” police said.

Update 12:15 p.m.:

San Mateo police say that they are continuing talks with the suspect in this case, working towards a peaceful surrender.

“SMPD is also communicating with the subject’s family and working to put various social assistance in place to help him as soon as possible,” police said.

The shelter in place order remains in effect.

Update 11:15 a.m.:

San Mateo police say that some residents have been watching the incident unfold from their rooftops-- which they strongly discourage, saying it causes ”grave danger.”

“SMPD is receiving reports of residents watching the incident from their rooftops. These residents are placing themselves in grave danger as we continue to negotiate for the safe surrender of an armed subject. For your safety, please REMAIN IN YOUR HOMES and stay tuned to Nixle for more updates. Additionally we have issued 2 separate landline alerts to residents in the area and we will continue to do so as the situation evolves.”

Update 10:45 a.m.:

Police say they remain on scene, and are in the process of negotiations with an armed suspect.

“SMPD remains on scene is now negotiating with the armed subject in hopes of resolving the situation peacefully,” police said. “He is alone in the home and is still a danger to himself. We are still asking ALL residents in the area to shelter in place...”

“Thank you for continued patience as we work towards a peaceful resolve.”

San Mateo police are asking people in the area of Edna Way to stay indoors, as a police situation unfolds.

According to SMPD, officers responded around 8:20 a.m. to the 600 block of Edna Way to a report of a man threatening to hurt himself. As of 10:22 a.m., police remained on scene.

“Officers arrived quickly on scene and have contained the situation to preserve public safety,” a nixle alert from the agency states. “SMPD is actively working now to resolve the matter as soon as possible.”

Police have since asked residents in the area to shelter in place. Here’s their alert:

“As a precaution while we work to resolve the situation, SMPD is asking residents in and around the 600 block of Edna Way, to shelter in place and lock all doors and windows. Again, this is as a precaution for the safety our community while officers on scene work to resolve the situation. We have sufficient police officers present at this time and have the situation contained to protect and preserve public safety.”

Police said they’ll provide updates as they become available. If you have an emergency in town, continue to use 911-- but not to ask for updates on this particular incident, police said.
