The fire was at the Riviera Apartments complex, according to a San Mateo County fire dispatcher. Neighbors of the involved apartment unit heard the smoke detector activate and called 911, O’Leary said.
Firefighters contained the blaze to the one apartment, which was unoccupied at the time of the incident, and the fire was under control shortly before 3:45 p.m., he said. No injuries were reported.

The fire started in the living room and O’Leary said he did not know if the unit was habitable.
The apartment is part of a terraced complex on a hillside, according to O’Leary.
He said the fire could have caused more damage if the neighbors didn’t immediately report the incident.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
