Levar Burton Coming To Redwood City For Housing Nonprofit Fundraiser
The "Roots" star will speak at the 50th anniversary fundraiser for HIP Housing, which helps people find affordable housing in San Mateo.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Levar Burton, the star of “Roots,” “Reading Rainbow,” and the host of the 2022 Grammy Awards pre-show, is coming to Redwood City’s Fox Theatre to speak at a housing nonprofit’s anniversary gala.
Burton will headline the 50th anniversary celebration for HIP Housing, a nonprofit that helps match individuals seeking a home with people who have rooms or accessory dwelling units for rent. Individuals often perform household duties in exchange for reduced rent. According to HIP Housing, more than 1 in 4 San Mateo County renters spend more than 50% of their income on rent.
HIP Housing’s 50th anniversary celebration will take place May 12 at 4:30 at the Fox Theatre. Burton will speak at a fireside chat that will pay tribute to HIP Housing founder Lois Almen Everett and longtime supporter Congresswoman Jackie Speier. The presentation will also feature client stories, auction items, and drinks.
