Local Teen Receives $500 Disney Friends for Change Grant for Global Youth Service Day 2015

Ryan Traynor, a Redwood City Teen, receives a $500 Disney Friends for Change Grant to lead a project to provide STEM kits for kids.

Redwood City, CA, April 17, 2015 - Ryan Traynor, a sophomore at St. Francis High School, has been awarded a Disney Friends for Change Youth Grant through YSA (Youth Service America). The grant will support Traynor in leading a community service project for Global Youth Service Day (GYSD). Ryan Traynor is one of 125 children and teens across the country who were awarded grants to lead projects that make a positive, lasting change in the world. This is the third year in a row that Ryan has been selected to lead a project.

Service activities will take place on Global Youth Service Day, April 18, 2015 - the largest volunteering and service event in the world. Traynor successfully implemented free STEM classes for kids at the library last summer and raised the 120 kids’ knowledge about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math tremendously while having fun conducting hands-on experiments. Saturday he will be packaging kits including instructions and supplies so that these classes can be run at schools and libraries in other areas. He hopes his project will encourage kids to graduate high school and gain an interest in STEM careers.

Traynor joins millions of other young people around the world as part of Global Youth Service Day, April 17 to 19, 2015. Now in is 27th year, Global Youth Service Day provides an opportunity for young people to find their voice, take action, and make a positive impact in their communities. As the largest service event in the world, Global Youth Service Day is celebrated in more than 135 countries and all 50 states.
