Marine World/Africa USA

Here are some older postcards of Marine World/Africa USA that was a tourist attraction located in Redwood Shores from 1968 to 1986.

A history of the park can be found on WikiPedia

But to summarize that history:
Marine World, as it was first called was built in 1966 and 68 on a site of approximately 66 acres (270,000 m2) of reclaimed tidelands of San Francisco Bay within the confines of Redwood City.

Marine World opened in July 1968. The park was owned and operated by the American Broadcasting Company. Ralph Helfer, a famous animal trainer bought out Marine World in 1972, when it went bankrupt, and added a wildlife park and "jungle theater", renaming the park as Marine World/Africa USA.

Many have fond memories of the park with its animal shows, play areas and safari theme that entertained many throughout its time in Redwood City.

The park moved in 1986 to Vallejo, California, to eventually become Six Flags Discovery Kingdom. The land of the former Marine World/Africa U.S.A. is now occupied by the world headquarters of Oracle Corporation.

I've had friends who have lived in the area all their lives tell me about working at Marine World during the summer months and speak with fondness of their experiences there.

What do you remember about Marine World in Redwood City?
